John Dory

John Dory, (Zeus faber), is found in temperate waters from West Coast to Northland, more common north of the Bay of Plenty. Its Maori name is Kuparu. Olive brown to silver with green-brown wavy strips and a large bluish spot ringed with white on the sides. Usually 30-45 cm and 1-1.5 kg, can reach 60cm. These have a range of habitats, but live mainly on open sandy seafloor. A solitary fish that feeds by engulfing smaller fish when it suddenly extends its huge mouth. A prime eating fish with firm white boneless fillets.
