Hapuku (Maori name) or Groper, (Polyprion oxygeneios), is found throughout New Zealand
over rocky ground in depths of up to 250 m. Dark blue-grey above and light grey below
with a protruding lower jaw. Usually 80-100 cm and 5-6 kg can reach 120 cm and 20
kg. A prime eating fish with firm white flesh. Owing to its large size this fish
is often sold as steaks cut transversely between sections of the vertebra.
