Snapper, (Pagrus auratus), is found from the northern South Island to the North Island
but is more abundant in the North Island. The Maori name is Tamure. Silvery pinkish
to golden or copper red above with bright blue spots over the upper sides. Usually
30-50 cm and 1-3 kg, can reach 100 cm and 15 kg. Snapper are at home in a wide variety
of habitats from shallow harbours up to depths of 150 m. A snapper will eat almost
anything in the way of animal food, shellfish, crabs, shrimps, heart urchins, and
small fish. One of our most important commercial and recreational species. A prized
eating fish with medium texture and white flesh.
